Reading a price chart: a beginner's field guide

8 min read · Jun 5, 2026

A price chart can look intimidating, but at its core it tells a simple story: what buyers and sellers agreed a company was worth, over time.

Start with the trend. Is the line generally rising, falling or moving sideways? Zoom out before you zoom in - a single bad day means little inside a multi-year climb.

Then look at volume. Big moves on heavy volume tend to be more meaningful than the same move on a quiet day. Pair that with momentum and you have a far clearer picture than price alone.
